Thomas Jefferson was an American statesman, diplomat, lawyer, architect, philosopher, and Founding Father who served as the third president of the United States from 1801 to 1809. He was also secretary of state and the main author of the Declaration of Independence. He was an Antifederalist. He represented Virginia in the Continental Congress (which adopted the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson and his friend James Madison established the first democratic-republican party (who helped right the Bill of Rights, along with John Jay and Alexander Hamilton)
