Allen pours water into a graduated cylinder. He notices that the surface of the water is curved, as shown below.
Slav-nsk [51]

Answer:

When water is added to a graduated cylinder, having a surface where the sides of the water look higher than the center means that the curved surface is a concave meniscus which has formed because of surface tension (Choice C).

Explanation:

A meniscus is simply the curvature that the surface of a liquid acquires when it is in a container, such as a graduated cylinder. It is concave when there is attraction between molecules -water and glass- or it can be convex when both surfaces are repelled.

Water is a polar molecule, with the capacity to adhere to the surfaces it comes into contact with. This characteristic causes it to form a concave meniscus, as the outermost molecules adhere to the glass surface, while the surface tension of the water attracts the molecules from the centre downwards, causing the concavity.

If Clark had no ions in his nervous system, ____. his action potentials would be faster his action potentials would be slower
telo118 [61]

Answer:

If Clark had no ions in his nervous system, he would not be able to generate an action potentials.

Explanation:

An action potential occurs when a stimulus causes sodium channels to open in a neuron. Sodium floods in, making the inside of the cell more negative and the outside more positive. This is known as depolarization. Then, the Potassium channels open to allow Potassium out (Repolarization). A few too many K+ ions will leave the cell (Hyperpolarization), and finally, the Sodium-Potassium pump will bring the cell back to resting potential.

As you can see, the Sodium and Potassium ions are essential to action potentials in the nervous system. If Clark had no ions in his system, he would not be able to send any action potentials at all.
