Let <em>x</em> = -1 and <em>y</em> = 1. Then <em>x</em> + <em>y</em> = 0, so that

|<em>x</em> + <em>y</em>| = |0| = 0

but

|<em>x</em>| = |-1| = 1

|<em>y</em>| = |1| = 1

|<em>x</em>| + |<em>y</em>| = 1 + 1 = 2
