Therefore, if someone <em>assumed this ground</em> , this means that the p person had made a decision and kept it. The person took a stance and could have acted upon it. He / She would have probably taken charges of his / her actions.

because, the other sounds very demanding or imperative, like as if you have to answer the question. so, it has to be the second line.
