They were both trying to spread their respective systems before the world war 2.

I am 95% sure it is the geography and climate of the area where they settled. If you take a look at different native groups, you’ll see that the most prominent factors are their farming/hunting and housing styles, both affected mainly by the climate and geography surrounding them.
The Japanese empire was territorialy expanding into China. It's longterm goal was to colonize and eradicate the ethnic Chinese. The invasion of Manchuria is what many consider the signal start of ww2
