Abstinence is a self-enforced restraint from something. It could be drugs, alcohol, sex, or some other things. In this case, there is the abstinence of other beliefs, ideas, and interests that the person is not supporting.

It is not empathy or conflict, and there is no mixed message because it is normal that we do not have the same beliefs and ideas and if there is disagreement people should accept it without conflict or mixed messages.
