This happens at two levels: physical and perceptual. At the physical level, our peripheral nervous systems gather information using a number of different nerve types each of which is sensitive to a particular type of stimulus. All the information gathered by the peripheral nervous system is conveyed through the central nervous system to its ultimate focal point: the brain.
