This part of the plot would be considered an inciting incident. This is mainly because Ponyboy is the main protagonist in The Outsiders and it throws him into very intense action in this scene. Even though this is not the Climax or the main plot of the story it sets up the rest of the plot by introducing the Socs and letting the reader get a glimpse into the rivalry between them. This also acts as a glimpse into future conflicts in the story and past events as well.
