For example, he used paradox when he said that <em>"the only thing we have to fear is...fear itself."</em> He also used pathos when he appealed to the audience's feelings, by saying <em>"nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance." </em>Roosevelt also employed logos when he said that <em>"The measure of the restoration lies in the extent to which we apply social values more noble than mere monetary profit."</em>

All of these devices, as well as the vivid language he employs, make this speech a persuasive and powerful one.
