The Texan army had a good defensive position, in the trees, and the Mexican army had no way to maneuver to them. The Mexican infantry soon found themselves with less weaponry too, as their Brown Bess muskets had a maximum range of only 70 yards, compared to the 200-yard effective range of the Texan long rifles. The Texans were short of ammunition, and although Mexican ammunition was plentiful it was poor quality. Sometimes, Mexican musket balls bounced off Texan soldiers, causing little damage other than a bruise. The Battle of Concepción lasted only about 30 minutes; at that point the Mexican soldiers retreated towards Bexar.
