It would have given him first-hand experience on the topic. When you experience something first hand it completely changes the way you see the topic in question. If Booker T Washington was born a slave he would have had to deal with certain scenarios which may have given him a clearer and deeper understanding of why people learn to hate each other and other races, which may have led to him creating ways to fight such hate and overcome it with love.
