El entrecruzamiento se produce durante la Profase I, es decir, durante el período inicial del primer ciclo celular meiótico (meiosis I). El sobrecruzamiento tiene una importancia fudamental desde el punta de vista evolutivo ya que este fenómeno incrementa la diversidad genética de las gametas obtenidas mediante este proceso.
