The House of Representatives have the ability to elect the President in the case of an electoral college tie. Even though this power is not used often, it is a critical part of their job. They must consider numerous factors including what citizens of their district would want, what would help American society, etc. Ultimately, this type of responsibility defines the members of the House as individuals who need to be impartial and reasonable in order to make the decision that is best for the country.
In the west, the definining feature of the modern era is the development of all forces of modernity, i.e., science, reason, democracy, liberty and equality. Medieval is in fact a term that is used to describe a societal period that lacked all these features.
The answer to this is entirely dependent on your own opinion. Some might believe it’s acceptable in order to keep the country safe, but others might not because they believe it infringes on individual freedoms. There are pros and cons to both sides, so you have to determine which side you agree with more.
If it is written down, it's called "libel" whereas if it's spoken, it's called "slander." Defamation law attempts to balance the freedom of speech and open exchange of ideas without giving someone permission to run around spreading lies about another that may harm his or her reputation, ability to earn a living, etc.
