I think it means we know what the words mean in every quote yet miss the real meaning of it and push it behind us. We know the words but are ignoring the message they are trying to give.

A blanket

The sentence says, "I pulled the soft red wool over my <em>entire body</em>", so that means that the answer can't be a hat or a glove, you can't put a hat over your entire body. Since the sentence also uses "pulled", I can assume that the answer is blanket because I don't think that you commonly say, when wearing a sweater, that you pull it on.
