Durante la transcripción eucariota, un fragmento de una de las dos cadenas del ADN conocido como 'gen' es utilizado como templado para producir un pre-ARNm. Este pre-ARNm contiene tanto regiones codificantes o 'exones' como regiones no codificantes o 'intrones'. Durante el empalme alternativo, los intrones son eliminados del pre-ARNm y los exones son empalmados para producir el ARN mensajero maduro final. El empalme de diferentes exones a partir del transcrito precursor (pre-ARNm) da lugar a proteínas de diferente longitud a partir de un mismo gen.
