Lamar believed that educated citizens made good decisions and prospered which would make Texas prosper as a Republic. He believed in public education so that every citizen of Texas had an opportunity to learn. Under his presidency , Lamar encouraged his Congress to approve 18,000 acres of land for public schools. In addition, he arranged an endowment that provided 231,400 acres of land for universities in Texas.
