Mirabeau Lamar also known as the “Father of Texas Education'' because he convinced the legislature to allot three leagues of land in each county for school development. He believed in public education so that every citizen of Texas had an opportunity to learn. Under his presidency , Lamar encouraged his Congress to approve 18,000 acres of land for public schools. In addition, he arranged an endowment that provided 231,400 acres of land for universities in Texas.
