In 1914, Britain gave Germany a request to leave the occupied territories of Belgium. The moment diplomatic negotiations failed and the request expired, all countries were at war. Canada gave over half a million volunteers who were involved in the war. That contribution is huge, considering that the country then had about eight million inhabitants. In addition to that contribution, hundreds of thousands of Canadians worked within the state's borders for certain jobs related to the contribution to Britain's war efforts. At the time of the outbreak of war, Canada was a self-governing unit but did not have all the powers of power in its hands, so the foreign policy was in England's hands.
