Muslim merchants who had came from the Arabian Peninsula and the land surrounding it, mainly established these merchant/diasporic communities for trade. They dominated trade around the Indian Ocean and increased the influence of Islamic culture around the lands near the Indian Ocean.

Dhows and junks, large cargo ships, were used by Muslim merchants. Religion diffused through diasporic communities. Merchants adopted the Hindu caste system, creating a sub-caste for merchants and Islam became a part of lower class India.

Diasporic community - a widely dispersed community as a result of a natural disaster, politics, etc. Diaspora - a dispersion of people from their original homeland or the community formed by those people.
