Gregor Mendel was an Austrian monk regarded as the Father of Genetics due to his immense contribution to discovering the patterns of inheritance. During his lifetime, Mendel worked with garden pea plants (Pisium sativum). One of the notable reasons he worked with peas is their ability to SELF-POLLINATE.
However, Mendel transferred pollen from one pea plant to another in a process called CROSS-POLLINATION. In cross-pollination, the pollen from one plant is transferred to another plant in order to FERTILIZE the egg and form embryos within a seed.
