The Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium law is an important way to check whether natural selection or other evolutionary factors are influencing a particular population.  Through the Hardy-Weinberg equation, we can determine the genetic configuration of a population that is not evolving.  From this analysis, we can compare the data with the actual information of the population and thus understand whether or not there is evolution.

According to Hardy and Weinberg, a population that is not evolving has, from generation to generation, constant frequency of alleles and genotypes. In those cases, where only recombination is observed according to Mendel's laws, we say that the population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.

A population is in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium when its genotypic and allelic frequencies remain constant. For the equilibrium to occur, the analyzed population must obey some premises. The essential conditions for a population to remain in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium are:

  • Lack of natural selection
  • No mutations
  • No gene flow
  • Large population
  • Same number of males and females in population
  • All couples should be fertile and have the same number of puppies.
  • Occurrence of random intersections.

The Hardy-Weinberg law states that in a sufficiently large population, in which matings occur randomly and that is not subject to mutation, selection or migration, gene and genotypic free frequencies are kept constant from one generation to another, once a state of equilibrium has been reached, which in autosomal loci is reached after one generation.

It is said that a population is in equilibrium when the alleles of the polymorphic systems maintain their frequency in the population throughout the generations.

From studies and research, I believe the proper question would be:

"How do the animals satisfy their need for water?" or "How long do the animals live?"

Explanation 1:

When studying the desert, asking "Can you buy the animals in pet stores?" is not going to help you find information about the desert because it is not a question to get information about the desert, only information if you just buy it at your local pet shop.

Explanation 2:

Asking "How many offspring do the animals have?" does help us learn about animals, but we are trying to find information on the structure of the desert in which the animals live in. We are not looking for how many children the animals will have because it doesn't fully relate to the question we would be asking.

Side Note: Offsprings mean children.
