Loyalist - Means you were loyal to the King of England even though you were residing in the colonies.

Patriot - Means you wanted freedom from the King. Patriots wanted to form a new government in the Colonies.

Colonist came to the 13 colonies in 1619. Which means its been more than 150 years. At this time many people hated the king and wanted to reform.
