How to factor polynomials

Mathematics

To factor polynomials, you have to find the greatest common factor.

For example:
4x2 + 12x
(4 x squared + 12x)

We know that 2 goes into 4 and 12, but there is a higher common factor of 4 that goes into both. You want to choose the highest/greatest common factor.

To factor out 4, you are also factoring out an x because there is an x in each too.

=4x(x + 3)

Another example:
= 5x3 + 10x2 + 15x
(5 x cubed + 10 x squared + 15)
= 5x(x2 + 2x + 3)

I hope this makes sense!

The population, P, of six towns with time t in years are given by the following exponential equations:
Oksanka [162]

Given:

The population, P, of six towns with time t in years are given by the following exponential equations:

(i) P=1000(1.08)^t

(ii) P = 600 (1.12)^2

(iii) P =2500 (0.9)^t

(iv) P=1200 (1.185)^t

(v) P=800 (0.78)^t

(vi) P=2000 (0.99)^t

To find:

The town whose population is decreasing the fastest.

Solution:

The general form of an exponential function is:

P(t)=ab^t

Where, a is the initial value, b is the growth or decay factor.

If b>1, then the function is increasing and if 0<b<1, then the function is decreasing.

The values of b for six towns are 1.08, 1.12, 0.9, 1.185, 0.78, 0.99 respectively. The minimum value of b is 0.78, so the population of (v) town  P=800 (0.78)^t is decreasing the fastest.

Therefore, the correct option is b.

Eric recorded the number of automobiles that a used car dealer in his town sold in different price ranges. From the Histogram gi
iogann1982 [59]

The correct answer is option A which is the number of cars sold for the price range of $4000 to $4999 will be 15.

<h3>What is a histogram?</h3>

A histogram is a graph for the representation of the data on the plot of the rectangular boxes. It has the data sets on the horizontal and the vertical axes.

As we can see from the histogram data we will conclude that the price range of $4000 to $4999 is shown by the third block and this third block reaches the height of 15.

Therefore the correct answer is option A which is the number of cars sold in the price range of $4000 to $4999 will be 15.

3. In the United States, the average amount of meat eaten
Dima020 [189]

If the average amount of meat eaten per person is 261 pounds per year then the average amount of meat eaten per day is 11 ounces.

Given that the average amount of meat eaten per person is 261 pounds per year.

We are required to find the average number of ounces of meat eaten per day.

There are 16 ounces in a pound. So,the average amount of meat eaten per person per year will be 261*16=4176 ounces per year.

Average number of ounces of meat eaten per day is there are 365 days in a year=4176/365=11.44 ounces per day.

Now by rounding it to the nearest ounce we will get 11 ounces.

Hence if the average amount of meat eaten per person is 261 pounds per year then the average amount of meat eaten per day is 11 ounces.
