Political factions have changed dramatically since the time of George Washington in many ways. One way they have changed is that they exist. In Washington's Farewell Address, he warns against political factions. The next year there were two the Democratic-Republicans, notably Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, and the Federalists, notably John Adams and Alexander Hamilton. Since then the issues we argue are essentially the same arguments we have today. The difference is the parties are more divisive now more than ever.
