A group of 18 people ordered soup and sandwiches for lunch. Each person in the group either ordered one soup or one sandwich . T
kkurt [141]
Let's say a = number of ordered soups, b = number of ordered sandwiches.

Then 4.5a + 7.75b = 113.50, and a and b are integers between 0 and 18 inclusive.

How do we tackle this? If all ordered soup, the cost would be $81, so we'll have at least 4 sandwiches. If all ordered sandwich, the cost would be $139.5, so at most 15 sandwiches were ordered. You also know an even number of sandwiches was ordered, to let the price end at 50 cent.

If you brute-force from 4,6,8,10,12 to 14 sandwiches, you find the answer at 10 sandwiches and 8 soups.

10*7.75 + 8*4.50 = 113.50

A scale drawing of a door is 2 cm high. If the scale is 1 cm = 4 meters, what is the actual height of the door?
Vikentia [17]
Solve;

If each cm = 4 meters, then you multiply.

4*2

= 8

There are 2 cm, each cm = 4 meters, so you multiply to get your answer.

The final height of the door is 8 meters.

(1/3)9 to the third power =
AlekseyPX
The answer would be
1/3 * 9 = 3,
3^3 = 3*3*3, which then we multiply:
3*3=9, 9*3=27.
27 is the answer.

Hope this helps and have a nice day:)

D^2(y)/(dx^2)-16*k*y=9.6e^(4x) + 30e^x
MA_775_DIABLO [31]
The solution depends on the value of k. To make things simple, assume k>0. The homogeneous part of the equation is

\dfrac{\mathrm d^2y}{\mathrm dx^2}-16ky=0

and has characteristic equation

r^2-16k=0\implies r=\pm4\sqrt k

which admits the characteristic solution y_c=C_1e^{-4\sqrt kx}+C_2e^{4\sqrt kx}.

For the solution to the nonhomogeneous equation, a reasonable guess for the particular solution might be y_p=ae^{4x}+be^x. Then

\dfrac{\mathrm d^2y_p}{\mathrm dx^2}=16ae^{4x}+be^x

So you have

16ae^{4x}+be^x-16k(ae^{4x}+be^x)=9.6e^{4x}+30e^x
(16a-16ka)e^{4x}+(b-16kb)e^x=9.6e^{4x}+30e^x

This means

16a(1-k)=9.6\implies a=\dfrac3{5(1-k)}
b(1-16k)=30\implies b=\dfrac{30}{1-16k}

and so the general solution would be

y=C_1e^{-4\sqrt kx}+C_2e^{4\sqrt kx}+\dfrac3{5(1-k)}e^{4x}+\dfrac{30}{1-16k}e^x
