The Cherokee built wattle and dubs with thatched roofs and these was their main form of shelter. They also had two chiefs in each village which was a Red Chief and a White Chief.

The Yamasee people lived along the coast but it was the Catawba that were called the people of the river. All three tribes practiced matrilineal leadership before the Europeans came.
