Main roads and turnpikes in 1840?
trapecia [35]

Private turnpikes were business corporations that built and maintained a road for the right to collect fees from travelers.2 Accounts of the nineteenth-century transportation revolution often treat turnpikes as merely a prelude to more important improvements such as canals and railroads. Turnpikes, however, left important social and political imprints on the communities that debated and supported them. Although turnpikes rarely paid dividends or other forms of direct profit, they nevertheless attracted enough capital to expand both the coverage and quality of the U. S. road system. Turnpikes demonstrated how nineteenth-century Americans integrated elements of the modern corporation – with its emphasis on profit-taking residual claimants – with non-pecuniary motivations such as use and esteem.

What is the main way a representative democracy differs from a direct democracy?
Marizza181 [45]

Answer:

Citizens elect leaders who vote on the issues in a representative democracy, and citizens vote on the issues in a direct democracy.

Explanation:

This is true, while the rest are false. Representative democracy was designed for large groups, not small, and direct democracies are designed for small, not large groups. The last option is wrong because the reason citizens elect their representative is so they can represent their desires and needs. And as for the 2nd option that representative democracy is modern and direct democracy is ancient, that just isn't a valid reason.

The year 1968 was the most turbulent year of the 1960s, both at home and abroad. Within the context of 1968, what was happening
mrs_skeptik [129]

1968 was one of the most turbulent years in America, many events happened in society and politics. During this period, America was at war in Vietnam but society’s opinion about the war shifted. This caused a crisis on the Democratic party because President Johnson lost approval which led to a dispute between Hubert Humphrey and Robert Kennedy.

People demanded Civil Rights and the end of the limitations imposed by the Black Codes. African Americans wanted the right to vote and to live an equal life at the same time society demanded the end of the Vietnam War.  When Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy were assassinated, riots spread around America.

These riots and protests against the Vietnam War and looking for Civil Rights were a reflection of political change around the world. The world faced a moment of social conflicts filled with popular rebellions. The main targets were the military and bureaucratic elites that invested in political repression. The Hippie movement also preached peace and love and another view of the world.
