The distance between two cities is 87 km. What is the distance between them on a map drawn at a scale of 1:600,000?
Elena L [17]

The distance between them on a map at a scale 1 : 600,000 is 14.5 cm

Step-by-step explanation:

Scale drawing:

  • Is used to represent a real object with accurate sizes reduced or enlarged by a certain amount (called the scale)
  • States the ratio of a length in the drawing to an equivalent length in the real world
  • 1 : 100 means 1 unit in drawing represents 100 units in real life

∵ The distance between two cities is 87 km

∵ The distance between them on a map drawn at a scale of

   1 : 600,000

- That means each 1 cm represents in real life 600,000 cm, so

you must change the kilometer to centimeter

∵ 1 km = 100,000 cm

∴ 87 km = 87 × 100,000 = 8,700,000 cm

Now let us use the ratio method

→   1    :    600,000

→   x    :    8,700,000

By using cross multiplication

∴ x × 600,000 = 1 × 8,700,000

- Divide both sides by 600,000

∴ x = 14.5

∴ The distance between them on the map = 14.5 cm

The distance between them on a map at a scale 1 : 600,000 is 14.5 cm
