At the Chicago school of sociology sociologist classify social relationships between groups to better understand social organization, institutions, social systems and their interactions. The concept ‘first class of organization’, proposed by the sociologist Charles Cooley, refers to the relationships that humans build within the family nucleus and their community, since childhood. The concept ‘secondary groups’ - from Cooley´s definition - refers to the impersonal interactions and relationships, mostly mediated by institutions,  functions or a social role in society, a good example is a the environment of a class room, face- to- face between students and professor. Another example could be a work office, interaction between coworkers.

In this case is ‘Susan and her classmates meet to discuss a class project’ would be a secondary group.
