Due to large trucks being used for mass transit of goods, highways and interstates began to be paved. The pavement allowed them to arrive at their destination faster. This is how the Interstate Highway System was formed. President Eisenhower endorsed the highways due to his desire for a faster and more efficient system during the Cold War. Overpasses are 16 feet high because that was the height that was needed for military vehicles at the time to pass through.
