If the reader knows the story of "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens, he will then know Miranda means that, just like the character Ebenezer Scrooge, she does not like to spend money.<u> However, it is possible that a reader may not understand the allusion. In that case, what Miranda says has enough context clues to make the allusion understandable. She says she was making a lot of money ("large profits"), but she would still save money like Scrooge. When someone is making a lot of money, it is common for them to also start worrying less about saving. If she is still doing it, we can assume she is a bit stingy.</u>
