A sanitary landfill with a surface area of 6000 m2 receives a yearly rainfall amount of 300 mm. About 20 percent of this precipi

tation is runoff and does not infiltrate the surface. A leachate collection system, which is installed underneath the landfill, is 90 percent effective at collecting and treating any water that infiltrates the surface of the landfill.Assuming consistent yearly rainfall amounts, what is the volume of leachate, in m3, that the landfill will be able to treat per year? *

Answer:

1296 m^{3} of water

Explanation:

Area of landfill is 6000 m^{2}

Rain fall depth is 300 mm = 300 x 10^{-3} m

volume of water that fall on the landfill is area x depth of water

v = 6000 x 300 x 10^{-3} = 1800 m^{3} of water

20% of this precipitate is runoff i.e 0.2 x 1800 = 360 m^{3}

total volume that infiltrates is 1800 - 360 = 1440 m^{3}

the leachate treatment is 90% effective in treating infiltrates, i.e 90% of 1440 m^{3} = 0.9 x 1440 = 1296 m^{3} of water water is treated yearly

What are the simalarities between the horizontal and vertical components of global winds?
Kamila [148]

The horizontal components have the latitudes, while the vertical component are located in the longitudes. The similarity is that they both work together to cause ocean currents, and also they cause cold wind currents, and also warm wind currents in different places.

1. Name and describe the layers of the Earth. How do these layers affect earthquake waves? How do earthquake waves help us to kn
Alisiya [41]

Answer:

Crust, mantle and core are three layers of earth

Explanation:

  • The earth consists of three basic layers crust (uppermost), mental (middle layer), and the core as (bottom-most).  Due to the variation in the rates of energy that moves between the three layers i.e the earth waves knows as P, S, and L waves are known to occur at various points of time.
  • These waves are called seismic waves and the P is called primary waves that can moves between the solids and liquids while the S layer moves to form solid objects and L long waves move.
  • All these moves through various velocities and on reaching the earth's surface tell about the depth, magnitude, and intensity which helps the earth scientists to determine the interior.

Which of the following is an accurate description of a method used to study short-term climate change?(A) The oxygen-isotope rat
stepladder [879]

Answer:

The answer is B

Explanation:

Tree rings form because during each growth season new water and food conducting cells (tracheids) are added around the perimeter of the tree trunk. Cells in the spring growth tend to be larger with thinner walls than the previous set of cells produced at the end of the previous summer. Over the course of the growing season, successive rings of cells become smaller with increasingly thick walls. In winter, growth ceases and no new cells are laid down. Then when the new growing season begins, thin-walled large cells form again producing a clear line between the old wood and the new wood because of the difference in texture.

Tree rings provide a record of past climate because their width is determined by tree growth rate, which in turn is determined by environmental conditions. Since one ring is produced every year (usually) the ages of the climatic events can be worked out very precisely by counting back. Records from young trees, old trees, house and ship timbers and fossil trees can be tied together by identifying sections with the same sequence of climatic event, the records overlap in time where the climatic patterns they record match up.
