My favorite american poet is Edgar allan poe. Something special about him is because his poems are primarily written as narrative poems, poems which tell stories in a metered verse. While his work wasn't meant to be recited or sung, he referred to many of his poems as "ballads" for their highly lyrical and dramatic quality. His well known style of gothic writing commonly used concepts of terror, mystery and the supernatural to bring fear and terror to society.
