Cervical cancer is caused by certain types of the sexually transmitted infection HPV. Two HPV types (16 and 18) cause 70% of cervical cancers and pre-cancerous cervical lesions.
Among the different sexually transmitted infections (STI), HPV is considered as the most common STI. It can be passed on through intercourse and other sexual activities with an infected person. It is known to cause cervical cancers.
