not very well, christianity was banned and christians were punished for many years. feeding christians to the lions was seen as entertainment in ancient rome. they would be put to death for not worshipping the emperor and anytime things went bad for the roman empire, it was blamed on christians. if they were to meet, it had to be in secret, etc.
