The Populist movement were initially started in local area within the southern and mid-western states. At that time, a group of farmers gathered together to create a party that represent their interest. They faced an economic difficulty due to the abuse of power conducted by the railroads company who impose a really high tariffs for the product distribution.

At first , their movement failed. But their ideals were carried out by the next generation who eventually founded the progressive party. This party managed to influence the government to pass series of laws to promote worker's right such as Imposing a maximum price for different type of products, minimum wage, maximum working hours, Subsidies for farmers, etc.
