Elaborative rehearsal is the method of storing or encoding information into a long termed memory by requiring the brain to process it thoroughly.

An individual that want to perform in a recitals dance probably need to do some dress rehearsal, during the rehearsal such individual try as much as possible to practice how the dance would actually be on the D-day.

The dress rehearsal is not different to elaborative rehearsal. But in elaborative rehearsal, the practice is for the memory. Elaborative rehearsal is the method to assist the short-term memory to store ideas or thought, and move it into the long-term memory.

However, there are 2 kinds of memory rehearsal. These include elaborative rehearsal and maintenance rehearsal.

The maintenance rehearsal is only to maintain new information temporarily in the short term memory and works by repetition. Sometimes, when individual don’t want to forget particular information, they said it repeatedly in order not to forget. Such situation is a great example of maintenance rehearsal.

Elaborative rehearsal was part of the levels of processing theory, which was proposed by Craik and Lockhart in 1972. Both researchers concluded that the depth of information processing had a direct impact on our ability to remember it.
