The stronger the pull of the element towards each other, the shorter is the bond length, and vice versa. The cause of this pull is the difference of their electronegativities. This is the ability of the element to attract electrons toward itself. In periodic trends, electronegativity increases from left to right, and from bottom to top. Thus, the arrangement of most electronegative to least electronegative element is: Cl > Br > I. Consequently, the arrangement of the shortest to longest bond length is: C-Cl > C-Br > C-I.
