The effects of not listening is not you will lose the main point of the conversation, it can affect your relationships with people as a bad communicator  at work, school, or personal relationships, being an active listener shows that you care about others opinions and views.

To listen properly is to pay attention to what the person says to you, be an active listener, provide your input respectively, don't judge or interrupt, and provide feedback at the end in a candid and respectful way.
