In at least 150 words, explain why Our Town is a modernist play. Discuss specific theatrical devices and themes that link the te
aliya0001 [1]
Our Town by Thornton Wilder is a modernist play because it explores the transience of human life, in a sense that the characters in the play highlight the significance of the little things that they do in their daily lives. The play is also narrated through the view of a stage manager which openly tells the audience about how the stage is designed and what each prop is meant for. The stage manager is a character both inside and outside the play which blurs the wall between the reality that what the audience is about to see is fictional, and the fiction that the play is supposedly real in the character's point of view. This characteristic of the play destabilizes the line between fact and fiction and is considered a modernist play based on that setting itself, among all other themes of the play.

Which detail most help the reader infer that female doctors were unsual at this time
Vilka [71]

The phrase blinked their eyes and looked twice helps the readers to understand the inference that the female doctors were not that common at those times.

What is an inference?

The complete question is: When she came forward at Commencement, in a delightful little Greenaway gown of white muslin, peppered over with tiny dots, with the very smile of childhood in her wide blue eyes, and her curly hair clustering round her brows—the learned doctors, imported to adorn the Commencement exercises, blinked their eyes and looked twice, and hesitated, even then, to accept her as an established fact. Which detail most helps the reader infer that female doctors were unusual at this time?

An inference is a conclusion and the deducing statement that is reached on the basis of the reasoning and the evidence. The data and the information stated in the sentence infer the details about a specific topic.

From the passage, the use of the phrase blinking their eyes and looking twice is the detail that shows that the female doctors were not that common to be seen at those times. The people were a little hesitant to accept the fact that the doctor was a female.
