In one baseball season, Peter hit twice the difference of the number of home runs Alice hit and 6. Altogether, they hit 18 home

runs. How many home runs did each player hit that season? Let h represent Alice's home runs.

6 0
H = Alice's home runs
p = Peter's home runs

p = 2(h - 6)
p + h = 18

Simplified:
p = 2h - 12
p - 2h = -12

p + h = 18

Solve simultaneously:
p - 2h = -12                              ...1
p + h = 18                                ...2

1 - 2:
-3h = - 30
h = -30/-3
h = 10

Substitute into 2:
p + h = 18
p + 10 = 18
p = 18 - 10
p = 8

Therefore, Peter hit 8 home runs and Alice hit 10 homeruns.

Naddika [18.5K]

The area of the square increasing at 30 \frac{cm^{2} }{sec}

The rate of change function is defined as the rate at which one quantity is changing with respect to another quantity. In simple terms, in the rate of change, the amount of change in one item is divided by the corresponding amount of change in another

Let the side of a square be x.

So,

Area of square = x^{2}

A =x^{2}

Differentiating with respect to time we get,

dA/dt = 2x dx/dt

When area = 9 cm^{2} the side becomes 3 cm

At x = 3cm and dx/dt = 5 cm/s (Given)

dA/dt = 2.3.5 = 30 \frac{cm^{2} }{sec}

Thus the area of the square increasing at 30 \frac{cm^{2} }{sec}

A volleyball reaches its maximum height of 13 feet, 3 seconds after its served. Which of the following quadratics could model th
kykrilka [37]
If it reaches its maximum height a t=3 its velocity must be zero at t=3

dy/dx=0 at t=3

dA/dx=4x+12=24 at t=3 so this does not apply

dB/dx=-4x+12=0 at t=3 and B=13 at t=3 so B applies

dC/dx=-4x-12=-24 at t=3 so this does not apply

dD/dx=-4x-12=-24 at t=3 so this does not apply

dE/dx=-4x-12=-24 at t=3 so this does not apply

So only quadratic B: reaches a maximum height of 13 feet at 3 seconds.
