Problem 10.23 in book: There are 3.4 billion base pairs lined up end to end in one human DNA molecule, which contains the entire

genetic code for the makeup of an individual person. Each base pair measures approximately 350 pm in length, and almost every cell in the body contains two complete DNA molecules. (a) If one DNA molecule was stretched end to end, how far would it stretch

Solution :

The total number of the base pairs in a human DNA molecule is given as

= 3.4 billion

= 3,400,000,000

The length of each of the pair of DNA  = 350 pm

                                                            $=350 \times 10^{-12} \ m$

a). Therefore the maximum length of the DNA when it is completely stretched end to end can be found out as  $=350 \times 10^{-12} \times 3,400,000,000 $

                                                                  = 1.19 m

                                                                  = 0.00119 km

Now 1 km = 0.6213711 miles

∴ 0.00119 km would be = 0.00119  x 0.6213711

                                     = 0.000739432 miles.

LaKeisha stepped on a piece of glass and quickly pulled her foot away from that sharp object. Which of the following are respons
nikdorinn [45]

Answer:

Motor nerves

Explanation:

Pulling the leg quickly from the sharp object is an example of reflex action. It includes sensory receptors, sensory neurons, interneurons, the control center (spinal cord), motor neurons and effector.

As soon as she steps on the glass piece, the receptors present in the skin of her foot sole sense it and send the information to the control center via sensory neurons. The spinal cord commands the muscles of the effector organ (leg) via motor neurons to move to step away from the glass piece.

New genes can be added to or replace the genes on a bacterial plasmid in a process known as __.
allochka39001 [22]

Answer:

Recombinant plasmid

Explanation:

Researchers can insert DNA fragments or genes into a plasmid vector, creating a so-called recombinant plasmid.

This plasmid can be introduced into a bacterium by way of the process called transformation.

What happens if there are no checkpoints in the cell cycle.
Slav-nsk [51]

Answer:

they may "loop out" of the cell cycle and into a resting state called G0, from which they may subsequently re-enter G1 under the appropriate conditions

Explanation:

At the G1 checkpoint, cells decide whether or not to proceed with division based on factors such as: Cell size
