Two of the three segments of the small intestine are responsible for these processes - the jejunum and the ileum (which located between first segment of the small intestine (the duodenum) and the colon). The colon, or large intestine, is responsible for maintaining fluid balance. The colon absorbs water from waste products of digestion and these waste products eventually become solidified stool.</span>
