The argument was about whether slaves would count as part of the population. The population affected how many seats the states got in the house. Southern states wanted them to count (more slaves were owned here) and Northern states did not want them to count (lesser slaves were owned here). Eventually they decided to count each slave as 3/5th of a citizen.
