Napoleón Bonaparte fue general francés, dictador revolucionario y emperador de Francia.   Procedente de una familia corsa, Bonaparte se alzó en el ejército durante la Revolución Francesa. Demostró ser un talento militar de primer orden. Las campañas en Italia y Egipto en particular lo hicieron popular. Esto le permitió tomar el poder en Francia mediante el golpe de estado del 9 de noviembre de 1799. De 1799 a 1804 ejerció como Primer Cónsul de la República Francesa y luego hasta 1814 y nuevamente en 1815 como Emperador de Francia, encabezó un régimen dictatorial con elementos plebiscitarios.  

A través de varias reformas, por ejemplo, la del poder judicial a través del Código Civil o la de la administración, Napoleón moldeó las estructuras estatales en Francia hasta el día de hoy e inició la creación del derecho civil moderno en los estados europeos ocupados. En términos de política exterior, con el apoyo del ejército, obtuvo temporalmente el control de gran parte de la Europa continental. Desde 1805 también fue rey de Italia y de 1806 a 1813 protector de la Confederación del Rin y nombró a miembros de la familia y confidentes como monarcas en varios otros estados. Con la disolución del Sacro Imperio Romano Germánico iniciada por él en 1806, la estructura estatal de Europa Central se convirtió en un tema central en el siglo XIX. Al principio, él mismo había difundido la idea del estado nación fuera de Francia, pero el éxito de esta idea hizo que fuera difícil mantener el orden napoleónico en Europa, especialmente en España, Alemania y finalmente también en Rusia.

El resultado catastrófico de la campaña contra Rusia de 1812 provocó la sacudida de su gobierno en gran parte de Europa, las Guerras de Liberación y, en última instancia, el derrocamiento de Napoleón. Después de un breve período de exilio en Elba, regresó al poder durante cien días en 1815.
