So preserving the body in as lifelike a way as possible was the goal of mummification. For the ancient Egyptians, the afterlife was a place that greatly resembled Egypt. Consequently, when they built their pharaoh's tomb, they wanted it to be beautiful and comfortable. That way, they could be sure that their pharaoh could enjoy his afterlife surrounded by the things he loved.
