Overall, as many may know, the South supported slavery because it needed laborers to work in the fields to grow and harvest crops, and the North opposed it, due to the ethical standpoint they took on slavery (it being bad to them). Racial injustice as a whole was the main cause of the Civil War, and amongst slavery, African-Americans at the time faced unfair trial in the South when accused of a crime, little or no pay at all for work and were publicly separated from White Americans when it came to things like cafeterias, bathrooms, and tools / amenities.
During the war, many school buildings were either damaged or requisitioned for war use, causing a shortage of suitable places to conduct school lessons. Lessons were held in unusual places such as chapels, pubs and church crypts.
