George Washington was commander in chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War (1775-83) and served two terms as the first U.S. president, from 1789 to 1797. ... During the American Revolution, he led the colonial forces to victory over the British and became a national hero. Qualities in George Washington that made him a good choice for commanding the Revolutionary army are his outstanding leadership and character, and that people implicitly trusted him. His most valuable contribution to independence was is the ability to unify his troops under one flag. Washington's charismatic presence, moral strength, and political maneuvering kept the Continental Army from rebelling against the weak civilian government and the Revolution degenerating into civil unrest. After the war, Washington was called upon to head the Constitutional Convention
