A soccer team has two games in two days against different teams. Let A represent the event "the soccer team wins the first game"

and B represent the event "the soccer team wins the second game." Use the above scenario when answering the following three questions.
1. Describe the meaning of P(B | A).
2. Do you think A and B are independent events? Explain your reasoning.
3. If the events are independent, how are P(B (A) and P(B) related? How come?

How many solutions are there for the system x^2+4y^2=100 and 4y-x^2=-20
never [62]
There are 5 solutions for this system.

x^2 + 4y^2 = 100  ____1
4y - x^2 = -20  ____2
Add both 1 & 2 together. x^2 gets cancelled
4y^2 + 4y = 80   (send 80 to the other side and divide by 4)
Then equation the becomes : y^2 + y -20 =0
Now factorise the equation: (y+5) (y-4) = 0
Solve for y :  y = -5 and y = 4
Using the values of y to find the values of x. From equation 1:
x^2 = 100 - 4y^2    x = /100 - 4y^2  (/ means square root) Replace values of y
y = -5, x = /100 - 4(-5)^2 = /100 - 100 = 0
y = 4, x = /100 - 4(4)^2 = / 100 - 64 = /36 = -6 or 6
Thus we have 6 solutions y = -5, 4 and x = -6, 0, 6

Find the distance of the point (3,4) from the midpoint of the line joining (8,10) and (4,6)
Elis [28]

Answer:

Distance between point (3,4) and midpoint of line joining (8,10) and (4,6) = 5 units.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

Points:

A(3,4)\\B(8,10)\\C(4,6)

To find distance from point A to midpoint of  BC.

Midpoint M of BC:

M=(\frac{x_1+x_2}{2},\frac{y_1+y_2}{2})\\

M=(\frac{8+4}{2},\frac{10+6}{2})\\     [Plugging in points B(8,10)\ and\ C(4,6)]

M=(\frac{12}{2},\frac{16}{2})\\

M=(6,8)\\

Distance between A and M:

D=\sqrt{(x_2-x_1)^2+(y_2-y_1)^2} \\

D=\sqrt{(6-3)^2+(8-4)^2} \\   [Plugging in points A(3,4)\ and\ M(6,8)]

D=\sqrt{(3)^2+(4)^2} \\

D=\sqrt{9+16} \\

D=\sqrt{25} \\

D=\pm5

Since distance is always positive ∴ D= 5 units
