Simplify: 3x2 - 4x - 5x2 + 8x
olga55 [171]

For this question, all you have to do is combine like terms.  I am assuming that the 3x2 and 5x2 are exponents, so they are one pair and then -4x and 8x are the other.  The rule is the higher exponent goes first, so here is what it looks like:

3x2 - 4x - 5x2 +8x

First combine the numbers with exponents, 3x2-5x2, you always bring over the positive or negative, which ever it may be, in this case, since it is -5x2, you bring that over.

3x2-5x2=-2x2

Now to do the number with matching letters, -4x+8x= 4x

Now just bring the problem back together:

-2x2+4x

That is your simplified answer: -2x2+4x.

Riverside Elementary School is holding a school-wide election to choose a school color. Five-eighths of the votes were for blue,
Mnenie [13.5K]

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the total number of votes to choose a color = x

Number of votes for blue = \frac{5}{8}\times x

Remaining votes = x - \frac{5}{8}\times x

                            = \frac{8x-5x}{8}\times x

                            = \frac{3}{8}\times x

Votes for green = \frac{5}{9}\times (\text{Remaining votes})}

                          = \frac{5}{9}\times \frac{3x}{8}

                          = \frac{5}{24}\times x

Finally remaining votes = \frac{3x}{8}-\frac{5x}{24}

                                       = \frac{9x-5x}{24}

                                       = \frac{4x}{24}

                                       = \frac{x}{6}

Since these votes are for red therefore,

\frac{x}{6} = 48

x = 48×6

  = 288

a) Votes for blue are \frac{5x}{8}

Therefore, exact number for blue votes = \frac{5\times 288}{8}

= 5×36

= 180

b). Votes for green = \frac{5x}{24}

= \frac{5\times 288}{24}

= 60

c). Since 25 students were absent on that day of the vote, number of students at Riverside Elementary School = 288 + 25

= 313

d). Since seven tenths of the votes for blue were made by the girls.

Therefore, number of girls voted for blue = \frac{7}{10}\times 180

= 7×18

= 126

Since total votes made = 288

Therefore, half of the votes made = \frac{288}{2}

= 144

Now it's clear that number of votes made by girls is less than half of all the votes.

e). 126 girls voted for blue.

It took my question down twice here's a real math question I guess
aliina [53]

Answer:

n-3

Interval notation: (-\infty, -10)\cup(-3,\infty)

Step-by-step explanation:

<u>First inequality:</u>

<u />n+8

Therefore, this inequality restricts:

n \in \mathrm{R};\: n

<u>Second inequality:</u>

< 8+n-3

Therefore, this inequality restricts:

n \in \mathrm{R};\: n>-3

Therefore, with both of these restrictions together, we have:

\fbox{$n \in \mathrm{R}; n-3$}\\\mathrm{or\:}\fbox{$n-3$}\\\mathrm{or\:}\fbox{$(-\infty, -10)\cup(-3,\infty)$}.

A dance class consists of 22 students, of which 10 are women and 12 are men. if 5 men and 5 women are to be chosen and then pair
OverLord2011 [107]

solution:

I choose 5 women from a pool of 10 in 10C2 ways.

I choose 5 men from a pool of 12 in 12C2 ways.

So total number of ways of choosing in 10C2 x 12C2. Now I need to arrange them in 5 pairs. This is where I have a different solution. The solution says that there are 5! ways to arrange them in pairs.

But I cant seem to understand why? My reasoning is that for first pair position I need to choose 1 man from 5 and 1 woman from 5. So for the first position I have 5 x 5 choices (5 for man and 5 for woman). Similarly for the second position I have 4 x 4 choices and so on. Hence the total ways are 5! x 5!

So I calculate the total ways as 10C2 * 12C2 * 5! * 5!. Can anyone point the flaw in my reasoning for arranging the chosen men and women in pairs.
