Erythema toxicum

A benign, widespread, temporary rash called erythema toxicum develops on a newborn as a response to the unfamiliar surroundings. Shortly after birth, it vanishes. It is not vernix caseosa, a thick, oily material that covers the skin in utero and is white and thick. The reddish-purple capillary angioma under the dermis known as nevus flammeus, or port wine stain, is not this.
